BIOLOGY  
INTRODUCTION

Biology is the study of living things.  It covers a vast range of topics studying the structure and function of the smallest components of organisms to the entire organism itself- including animals, plants and microorganisms.   Not only will Biology develop an understanding of theory, it also develops a range of practical, mathematical, analytical and evaluative skills which are essential for a variety of course and careers.

Biology; Organisation;  Infection
and response and Bioenergetics

This examination Unit covers the following topics:  Homeostasis

and response; Inheritance, variation and  evolution;  ecology

ASSESSMENT

Paper 1 - Topics 1-4: Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, Multiple choice, structure, closed short answer and open response (50% of GCSE).
Paper 2 - Topics 5-7: Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, Multiple choice, structure, closed short answer and open response (50% of GCSE).

CONTENT
UNIT: 1

Cells are the basic unit of all forms of life. We explore how structural differences between types of cells enable them to perform specific functions within the organism.

UNIT: 2  In this section we will learn about the different body and plant systems and that damage to any of these systems can be debilitating if not fatal.
UNIT: 3 You will learn about pathogens such as viruses and bacteria that cause infectious diseases in animals and plants and how the immune system combats this.
UNIT: 4 In this section you will learn about photosynthesis and respiration and their essential role in organisms.
UNIT: 5 We will explore the structure and function of the nervous system and how it can bring about fast responses. We will also explore the hormonal system which usually brings about much slower changes
UNIT:6 In this section we will discover different types of cell division, genetics, mutations, variation and how this leads to evolution. Genetic technologies will also be covered.
UNIT: 7 In this section we will explore how humans are threatening biodiversity as well as the natural systems that support it. We will also consider some actions we need to take to ensure our future health, prosperity and well-being.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Within each topic and both tests students will be expected to demonstrate their ability to think scientifically in the context of practical exams and be able to do basic calculations linking to biology. There are 8 core practicals that students will completed throughout the GCSE – exam questions are likely to be based on the skills required for these practicals. This is instead of coursework or a practical controlled assessment
