The Classics Department at Woodford (Mrs Bent (Head of Department) and Mr Pine) teaches two main subjects, Latin and Classical Civilisation (known in the school as Classics).

Although learning grammar and vocabulary is essential for progress, Latin is alive and fun and much more than a dry list of grammatical rules. Instead we teach it as a language used to tell stories, using the Cambridge Latin Course ( http://www.caecilius.com ). This year there has been regular role play and some art and project work as well as translation and grammar. Once the basic grammar has been learnt, it opens the door to great adventures and love stories – the Fall of Troy, the Foundation of Rome, Dido's tragic love for Aeneas …

For those of you who enjoy ICT CD Roms will shortly be available to supplement the course and there are sites to surf listed below.

Latin is a language
As dead as dead can be,
First it killed the Romans...

AND NOW I'M HAVING A GREAT TIME LEARNING IT AT WOODFORD!

This subject has proved itself to be one of the most popular GCSE options over the past few years. In fact, many of our Sixth Formers go on to read Classics at University.

Homer is not just the guy who likes doughnuts in the Simpsons and with the recent smash hit Troy and the forthcoming Alexander the Great epics following Gladiator and interactive programmes on Pompeii and Rome Classics is very much back in the public eye again and is set to become a fashionable subject once again !! You also could become part of the revolution in Classics by studying the subject !!

Classical Civilisation is one of the most wide ranging subjects on the Curriculum. It is a subject which has influenced our own way of life – our politics, our medicine, our religious philosophy, our literature, our art, our education systems, our architecture, our films and even our construction industry (did you know that the Romans invented cement?) ...

A group of Sixth Formers run the weekly Latin and Classics Club in the Classics Room at school. They offer wider insights into the Classical World by acting out plays and showing classics films and can offer help with homework for junior students. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!

The Classics Department at Woodford believes that there is more to our subject than classroom work. We regularly run study visits abroad and have visited Greece, Italy and Turkey. In March 2004, Years 10 - 13 went on a highly enjoyable trip to Rome and Pompeii and fortunately Vesuvius managed not to erupt for the moment although we are returning in October! Pictures from one of our visits in 2000 can be found here.

There have been theatre visits to see the set plays for the Sixth Form Classicists and a number of Sovereign Education and LACT lectures for Sixth Formers in Latin and Classics.

We also have close links with Bancrofts and have an open invitation to attend any lectures offered by their Classics Department.

We are intending to attend GCSE days for Year 10 and 11 students at Oxford University in the near future.

If you would like to find out more about Classics in general, contact the teachers above and below is the Internet guide that we make available to the students at Woodford and there are notices and resources regularly posted on Woodford@home. You can even post your own message !!
