Celebrating School Birthday

School Birthday draws Old Girls back to Woodford every year.  Some attend School’s Birthday assembly with staff and pupils, join in the singing of Gaudeamus and Forty Years On and gather in the Front Hall for coffee and birthday cake.   Others come to the Birthday Tea, held in the Dining Hall on the last Saturday in September and hosted by the Old Girls Association. The tea is a wonderful opportunity to catch up on old friendships and new gossip, and conjure up stories and memories from Woodford Days long gone.

There’s a modest charge for a truly delicious tea which is open to all.  Members of the OGA receive invitations through the annual newsletter; non-members are also welcome to the tea although prior notification to the Treasurer is requested.

The Birthday tea is preceded by a meeting of the OGA, which normally takes place in the former Gym.  The formal business itself is very short, and is followed by an address by the Headteacher on what’s been happening in School during the previous year.

On Special Birthdays (95th, 100th) the OGA caters for a full day’s activities, including Morning Coffee, Lunch and Tea.  There’s a longer afternoon meeting in the School Hall, with a short service and the singing of Gaudeamus and Forty Years On.

There are now three generations of former WCHS pupils all of whom qualify as “Old Girls”.  Every one is warmly invited to attend the OGA School Birthday, whether or not they are paid-up members of the Association, and join in the celebration of our shared experiences and School’s unique heritage.

When did YOU leave Woodford?

If you have a special year coming up for your year group, do consider organising a reunion to take place at the OGA Birthday Tea for School Birthday. What better way to take a trip down memory lane than traversing the iron gates, making your way through the twisty passage and soaking in the atmosphere of Woodford that remains pervasive, despite the many changes and modifications over the years.  Whilst you enjoy a wander around the School, the OGA can arrange your own Special Birthday Corner for you to sit together for the tea and in the words of our iconic school song 'look back, and forgetfully wonder what you were like in your work and your play'. A perfect way to catch up with old friends and remember your Woodford days, be it 1 year, 5 years or indeed anywhere near 40 years on or more!
