Teacher of Design & Technology (with Electronics)

Fixed Term Contract up to 12 months (Maternity Cover)

MPS/UPS (Outer London)

Required for January 2025

We are looking for a qualified full-time teacher of Design & Technology (to cover a period of maternity leave) who can deliver KS4 GCSE DT & KS3 Electronics.

KS4 GCSE Design & Technology: This will involve the teaching of 1 Y10 group and 1 Y11 group. We deliver the AQA specification (8552). The KS4 curriculum is established and fully resourced. Support and guidance will be offered by the DT Head of Department. By January year eleven will have completed Sections A to D of their NEA, and they will be about to start Section E. The NEA will complete part way through spring term two (March).

KS3 Electronics: KS3 Electronics comprises of the following:

Year 7: Basic electronics, prototyping and testing. The emphasis is on basic electronics theory.

Students learn about electronics systems, circuits, current, voltage, resistance, components, symbols, ‘Circuit Wizard’ CAD software and breadboards (with the Micro-Bit Inventor Kits).

Year 8: Advanced electronics, CAD/CAM technology. The emphasis is on technology & CAD/CAM.

Students learn about the systems approach to designing, the transistor and advanced components. They also learn about ‘2D Design’ CAD software and acquire key CAD skills.

Year 9: Robotics and automation. The emphasis is on innovation, technology & design.

Students learn about sustainable power sources, smart cities, robotics, automation, motors and sensors.

They engage in a practical challenge to programme control and automate a robotic vehicle.

All resources for the delivery of the above teaching and learning are established, complete and ready to use. Support in the delivery of the above teaching and learning could be provided if and when necessary.

The role also will require you to teach Computer Science to one year seven group (two lessons per fortnight). Resources for these lessons will be provided by the Computer Science department. Support and guidance will also be provided by the Computer Science Head of Department.

Person Specification:

You must possess the following:

  • Basic knowledge of and an interest in electronics (and/or a willingness to learn).
  • A basic knowledge of simple ‘block’ coding using the Micro-Bit and Arduino, would be an advantage.
  • An interest in / willingness to learn about basic computer science would be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of resistant materials, workshop routines tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Practical and technical capability and an ability to operate standard workshop machinery.
  • IT competency [Word, Outlook, Excel, and specialist software where needed].
  • Ability to engage with internal systems for ordering, reporting issues etc.
  • Ability to self-manage time and workload and adhere to deadlines.
  • Good organisational skills, communication skills and an ability to work within a team.
  • A willingness to be flexible and adaptable, to meet the needs of the department.
  • You must have a current H&S certificate, accredited by DATA [Design & Technology Association].
