On Tuesday afternoon, 30 GCSE and A Level musicians took part in a workshop with members of the internationally acclaimed Britten Sinfonia, who came to visit Woodford for the afternoon. After a variety of musical warm-ups, the group discussed and listened to music from across the centuries, trying out a variety of composition and performance techniques as they went, before composing their own music in response to ideas taken from the music of Gabriel Fauré. The workshop served as an intriguing and enjoyable introduction to a concert by the Britten Sinfonia next week at the Wigmore Hall, which the same students will be attending.

The workshop was a great opportunity to compose and perform with professional musicians, and gave students an interesting insight into how Modern and Romantic composers use (and abuse) compositional techniques from earlier periods of music. We’re very grateful to the Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall for choosing to work with Woodford, and looking forward to next week’s concert.
